The history of Russell Auto Inc.
In October 1957, Wesley Russell began working for Portland Transmission
Exchange. He opened the branch on West Central St. in downtown
Manchester for the Portland Maine based company. The business grew over
the next several years and many of the auto dealers at that time were
also located in downtown Manchester and several within short walking
distance. In May 1965, Wesley purchased the business and relocated the
business to south Manchester where we have remained since.
Wayne grew up in the business having the opportunity of hanging around
the shops as a youngster. Working part time and summers, transmissions
became a way of life. Wayne graduated with honors from Memorial High
School and went on to Lowell Tech as engineering major. After a year of
college, it decided to go to work full time with the company. He’s been
here ever since!
The business in 1965 was located on Alpheus St. and later expanded to
So. Willow St. Currently our offices, customer service, parking and bays
are located on the popular and easily accessible street. Currently we
have 7 bays and lifts, with our latest truck bay capable of vehicles up
to 38’ long!
Over the years, Russell Auto became active members of the Automatic
Transmission Rebuilder's Association. Wayne founded the Northeast
Chapter, became the president of the chapter and later served as a
National Director for ATRA. Russell Auto still maintains a leadership
role today in the association. ATRA GEARS Magazine featured the company
in the April 2005 issue to celebrate the 40’Th anniversary of Russell
Auto Inc.
In 1997, Tory Russell joined the company and worked as parts manager.
Tory is Wesley’s grandson and Wayne’s nephew. Like Wayne, he spent early
years working after school and summers at the company. Tory has
progressed in his duties and currently manages the shop operations and
serves as Vice President.
Wesley Russell sold the business to Wayne in 1997. However, he still
spends a great deal of time around the shops! He handles many early
transmissions for us and helps around. All of us appreciate the years of
knowledge he has and we tap this often. The future? Tory is next in line
to carry the company on. What about the fourth generation? Dylan and
Justin are in training now! We’ll see how the DNA works in the years to
come!
